How to get Carbuncle in Final Fantasy Resonance

Among the nine Espers in Final Fantasy Resonance, Carbuncle is an Esper you can get without a fight. Chapter 3 offers an optional event: solve the Ruby Cave stele’s riddle, then find three fragments near Olderion, the Aquapolis, in the specified sequence.

Quick answer: During Chapter 3, examine the stele at Ruby Cave’s northern end, southwest of Olderion. Then pick up the fragments southeast, east, and northwest of Olderion, in that sequence, and head back to the stele. There is no fight. The confirmation reads, “You can now summon Carbuncle!”

When you can get Carbuncle

The event opens in Chapter 3, “Wardens of the Aquapolis”, as soon as you first arrive in Olderion, the Aquapolis. That moment lines up with the chapter objectives “Go to Olderion, the aquapolis” and then “Gather information in Olderion”. The main walkthrough takes you there as part of the story.

No story objective ever points you to Carbuncle, so it is easy to walk past. It is not missable, though. Neither the stele nor the NPC who hints at it depends on story progress, so you can do the whole event any time after reaching Olderion, later chapters included.

Step 1: Get the hint from Dalim (optional)

An NPC named Dalim in Olderion nudges you toward the event. He tells you, “In a cave to the southwest of here is a stone stele.” He then adds, “There’s an esper that’s cuddly and—ah, but perhaps I’ve already told you too much.”

Talking to him is not required. The stele works whether or not you have spoken to Dalim. Olderion is also home to the jump rope minigame, so you are likely to spend some time in town anyway.

Step 2: Read the stele in Ruby Cave

Head southwest of Olderion to Ruby Cave and push through to its far, north end, where the stele stands. Interact with it to read a letter addressed to someone named Damundo. The text reads, line by line:

“Dear Damundo,”

“Collect the three fragments around Olderion. Acquire them all and return here, and your wish will be granted.”

“The first lies southeast of the city. It holds the big and small ponds in both hands. The second, to the city’s east. With your back to the two indentations, look at the sea.”

“Finally, the third is to the northwest of the city, to the left of the seven waterfalls. Yet be forewarned: you must retrieve them in the order writ here.”

If you lose track of the wording, read the stele again and it repeats the riddle in full.

The riddle answers: where each fragment is

FragmentRiddle lineWhere it is
1“The first lies southeast of the city. It holds the big and small ponds in both hands.”Southeast of Olderion, close to the entrance to Rukh Cave
2“The second, to the city’s east. With your back to the two indentations, look at the sea.”Due east of Olderion, on the coast
3“the third is to the northwest of the city, to the left of the seven waterfalls”Northwest of Olderion, by the Waterfall Way entrance

The first line’s “southeast of the city” puts you near the Rukh Cave entrance. For the second, “the city’s east” combined with “look at the sea” means the coast east of Olderion. The third line’s “seven waterfalls” refers to Waterfall Way, so “to the left of the seven waterfalls” lands you by the Waterfall Way entrance.

Step 3: Collect the three fragments in order

Each fragment only appears once you reach its step, so you cannot grab a later one early. Follow the stele’s order exactly. Every fragment is the key item Ruby Fragment, described in-game as “A gleaming red stone. Found at the location carved on the stele in Ruby Cave.”

Fragment 1: Southeast of Olderion

Go southeast of the city to the area near the Rukh Cave entrance. When you pick it up, the party remarks, “This might be the first fragment the stele in Ruby Cave refers to.”

Fragment 2: East of Olderion

Travel due east of the city to the coast. On pickup, the party says, “According to the stele in Ruby Cave, there should be three fragments in total. So, just one more to go.”

Fragment 3: Northwest of Olderion

Finish northwest of the city, near the Waterfall Way entrance. Grabbing it triggers “That should be all the fragments that the stele in Ruby Cave mentions.” followed by “Let’s go back to Ruby Cave…”

Step 4: Return to the stele

Once you have the three Ruby Fragments, return to Ruby Cave and examine the stele. Carbuncle emerges and says, “Yep! I’m Carbuncle. Thanks for getting me out of that thing!”

It turns out Carbuncle has been stuck there since a game of hide-and-seek with a child named Damundo, the name on the stele’s letter. That child grew up to be Dalim. There is no fight. The message “You can now summon Carbuncle!” appears, and Carbuncle joins your party as an Esper.

If you visit Dalim in Olderion afterward, he thanks you: “Thank you, my friends, from the bottom of my heart. Please take good care of Carbuncle.”

Reflect’s help text reads, “Reflects magic back (excluding magic unique to certain characters).” That includes your own healing. A Reflected ally cannot be healed by your Cure spells, so top everyone up before you cast Ruby Light, or lean on items while Reflect is active.

Carbuncle counts toward two achievements: “Esper’s Covenant” (“Gain help from 3 espers.”) and “The Sovereigns of the Planet” (“Gain help from all espers.”). For the rest of the roster, there is Titan, the similar optional Esper event built around Ramuh’s question in Chapter 2, and the full Espers list.
