How to Grapple in Phantom Blade Zero (Hunter’s Chain Sickle Anchor Points)

Grappling unlocks with the Hunter's Chain Sickle, works without equipping it, and starts at a cliff in Weeping Creek Valley.

Quick answer: You need the Hunter’s Chain Sickle, which works even when it isn’t equipped. Look at an anchor point until the “L Ctrl” prompt appears on it, then press Left Ctrl and Soul is pulled up to it.

What you need to grapple

Grappling comes from the Hunter’s Chain Sickle, the reward for beating The Hunt’s second fight at the Great Waterfall in Weeping Creek Valley. Its reward card lists the field ability:

“Grappling Traverse: Once obtained, the Hunter’s Chain Sickle can grapple onto distant anchor points for traversal, even when not equipped.”

Right after that, a tutorial called “Hunter’s Chain Sickle Exploration Ability” opens and repeats the point: “The Hunter’s Chain Sickle can latch onto special anchor points and pull Soul up even when not equipped.” Its clip shows Soul swinging up across a gap in a cliff.

It really does work from your inventory: the grapple below was done with the Dread Axe still set as the Phantom Edge, so you can keep your preferred Phantom Edge for combat (see how to switch Phantom Edges).

How to grapple onto an anchor point

Turn your view toward the ledge or cliff top you plan to reach. If an anchor point is visible but too far away, a small white circle appears on the rock to mark it.

Approach until the circle becomes an “L Ctrl” key prompt, accompanied by a small arrow below it and displayed on the anchor. The prompt can appear while you’re a few metres away, so you needn’t stand right below it.

Press Left Ctrl as soon as the prompt shows, from wherever you’re standing. Soul flings the chain sickle up at the anchor point. There’s no aiming and no button hold; it’s a single press.

Let the chain do the rest. It hauls Soul through the air to the anchor and sets him down on the ledge above, which confirms the grapple worked. At the first anchor point, that’s about 11 metres higher than where he started.

The pull ends on the upper ledge, with the climb continuing up the gorge from there.

Don’t keep walking toward the anchor once the prompt is up. On the lower blocks near the first anchor point, edging closer can drop you off the edge and into the stream below.

First anchor point location in Weeping Creek Valley

You can use the grapple almost immediately after The Hunt’s second fight. The route runs from the Great Waterfall bell to a roadside shrine.

Start at the Great Waterfall bell and head to the foot of the waterfall where you fought The Hunt.
Under the falls, use the “Space” Scale prompt on the ledge to climb up. Behind the falls, take the wooden scaffold with chains into a tunnel with a plank floor.
Leave the tunnel and go south-west to a brazier beside an orange-lit wall marked with crossed scratches. Climb the wall with Space (see how to climb walls).
Once at the top, follow the high rock westward, passing a small waterfall on the way to a roadside shrine surrounded by red candles and scattered corpses (the Reply to a Request for Aid and The Discordance notes are on this route).
Find the anchor point on top of the block-shaped cliff next to the shrine. Stand on the high rock west of the shrine, face the cliff top, and press Left Ctrl when the prompt appears.

Once you land on the upper ledge, the path continues with another wall marked with crossed scratches to climb.

Phantom Blade Zero grapple keys on PC

Grappling shares its key with Phantom Edge attacks, so expect Left Ctrl to do double duty on the default keyboard layout.

Chain-Sickle Traverse at weapon level 15

The anchor-point grapple is separate from Chain-Sickle Traverse, an art of the Chain Sickle that unlocks at weapon level 15. Its description reads: “Press [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to hurl the Chain Sickle at the ground or a wall and vault toward the target point. Consumes no Remnant Spark outside combat.”

To raise the weapon’s level, use Upgrade Equipment at the Forge or at a bell and open the Phantom Edges tab.
