Quick answer: Defeat Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster, in the Lion Dance Hall in Pangzhen‘s backstreets during the main quest “The Heart’s Trail”; the Dormant Flaming Mane is awarded automatically after the fight’s cutscene.
How to get Dormant Flaming Mane
The item comes from the fight with Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster. Find him inside the Lion Dance Hall, tucked into Pangzhen’s backstreets, while pursuing the main quest “The Heart’s Trail”. His encounter is included in the ordered roster of Phantom Blade Zero bosses.
The fight runs across two health bars, one after the other.
| Health bar | Name | HP |
|---|---|---|
| First | “Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster” | 88,830 |
| Second | “The Lion Dance Grandmaster’s Final Dance” | 98,700 |
Once the second bar is empty, a cutscene plays and the Dormant Flaming Mane lands in your items. The fight itself hands it over as a story item. It isn’t a pickup you have to spot on the floor or a random drop, so winning is all it takes.
When the cutscene ends, you’re standing next to The Sealed Lion bell. Rest there. The Pangzhen interactive map shows the other bells in the region.
Beating him also grants the achievement “The Lion’s Spirit Lives On”. It’s included in the complete Phantom Blade Zero achievements list.

The Dormant Flaming Mane is listed with the type “Item”. Its card reads:
“A lion-headed flamethrower, now cold and silent after its fuel ran dry. For the time being, it can not be used.”
“If refueled, it may be able to burn through bramble barriers on the path.”

What the Dormant Flaming Mane is for
After the fight, Soul works out what the lion head is good for. The fire inside it is dead, so it’s useless for now. If that fire comes back, though, it should burn away the brambles blocking the town’s south gate. If you’ve already crossed paths with Lei Dang, Soul adds that Lei Dang is an expert in fire weapons and might be able to get the lion head burning again.
Restored, the weapon is the Flaming Mane Phantom Edge, described in game as “The signature lion head weapon of Flame, the Lion Dance Grandmaster.” Its field ability, Burning Path, “Burns through damp brambles, even when not equipped.” You don’t need to keep it in a slot to clear those barriers.
A separate item, the Blazing Lion Head, is found in the same Pangzhen backstreets. You use it to Soul Temper the Flaming Mane.
