Enshrouded 1.0: How to Get Skill Points

Level-ups give 2 skill points each, Shroud Roots give 1, and Elixir Well roots give 3. You spend them on the Skills screen.

Level-ups give 2 skill points each, Shroud Roots give 1, and Elixir Well roots give 3. You spend them on the Skills screen.

Enshrouded 1.0 has two sources of skill points. You earn them by gaining levels and by destroying Shroud Roots. Skill tree unlocks cost points, so knowing how much each source pays tells you where to spend your time.

Quick answer: Each level-up gives 2 skill points (level cap 50). A standalone Shroud Root gives 1, and an Elixir Well root gives 3, once per character. Spend them on the Skills screen (H), and redo them with Reskill at a Flame Altar.

To keep earning points from roots, you need to find new ones. The Elixir Well roots pay the most per root.

Levelling up for skill points

Most of what you do in the world gives XP toward the next level. Common XP messages look like this:

  • “Enemy slain XP +150” for killing the Fell Thunderbrute, the Elixir Well boss
  • “Quest reward XP +225” for destroying the Elixir Well’s Shroud Root
  • “Location discovered XP +400” for finding an Ancient Vault
  • “XP +1400” for awakening a survivor such as the Blacksmith

That means an Elixir Well run pays you twice. The root gives you skill points directly, and the boss and root XP push you toward another level-up.

Destroying Shroud Roots and Elixir Well roots

Bring a felling axe. You need it to cut down a Shroud Root. When you reach one, the game says “The Shroud Root is the source of our misery. Destroy it with a felling axe and prosper.”

When the root under the Springlands Elixir Well came down, “NEW LOCATION CHARTED!” appeared, the red Shroud around it was gone, and the achievement “Well done! Cleared the first elixir well.” popped up. That root waits past the Elixir Well boss; see how to get back down to the Fell Thunderbrute for the way in.

Spending skill points on the Skills screen

After you destroy your first Shroud Root, the Flame brings up skill points the next time you choose “Commune with the Flame” at your Flame Altar:

“Behold, a glimmer of strength, Flameborn. Felling the Shroud Root granted you Skill Points. Spend them in the Skill Tree to unlock new, wonderous powers. Forget the way of the Warrior, the Ranger and the Wizard. You must forge your own path if you wish to survive.”

The Flame explains that felling the Shroud Root granted Skill Points to spend in the Skill Tree.

You do not need to visit the altar to spend points. Press H to open the Skills tab.

Press H to open the SKILLS tab. You can also press H at the “H Invest Skill Points” prompt right after a level-up.
Check your point totals in the top left. IN USE shows how many points you have spent, and AVAILABLE shows how many you can still spend.
Choose a node on the tree. The tree is one shared map. A center ring of small skills is surrounded by class areas such as Survivor, Beastmaster, Ranger, Assassin, Trickster, Athlete, Barbarian, Warrior, Guardian, Battlemage, Healer and Wizard. Ranked nodes show their progress as 0/3.
Unlock the skill. We unlocked Double Jump first; it costs 2 skill points. Its tooltip reads “Allows jumping a second time while airborne. Cost: 10 Stamina”. Your first unlock also gives you the achievement “Erudite – Unlocked the first skill.”

The right side of the same screen lists your attributes. These are Constitution, Spirit, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence.

For what every node does and what it costs, see every skill at the center of the skill tree, every Warrior skill, every Ranger skill and every Mage skill. The interactive map marks every Shroud Root and Elixir Well.

Resetting skill points with Reskill

Spent points are not locked in. Open the menu at your Flame Altar and pick Reskill, which sits under Upgrade Altar and Strengthen the Flame. Its description, “Modify or Reset the Skill Tree”, explains what it does. You can take points back and spend them on a different part of the tree.
