Abilities in Final Fantasy Resonance are passive and active perks that you slot onto each character separately from their Vision. The game doesn’t slot anything for you. Every ability slot starts empty, so a party that never visits the menu fights with only the abilities its worn Visions already give.
Quick answer: From the Main Menu, enter Equipment & Abilities. Choose a character, open an unfilled ability slot, then select an entry under Equippable. Slotted abilities must use no more AP than that character has available.
Every character gets eight ability slots plus an AP pool. By Chapter 3, most party members have 108 AP. Raising Vision Mastery Ranks teaches abilities. A character retains each ability learned through a Vision and can equip it while using another Vision—or with no Vision equipped.
Where the ability slots are
Press Tab to open the Main Menu, then go to Equipment & Abilities. The party is listed on the left. Each character’s page shows their Role, Attributes, Equipment (a weapon, armor, and two accessories), Visions, and an ABILITIES panel with an AP counter.
An untouched character, such as Rain, reads “AP 0/108”, and all eight slots read “None”. AP is the last entry in the Attributes list and shows the size of the pool, which is 108 for Rain. Press R to open Skill Details and C to go back.

Restore HP on Stagger “Restores 10% of max HP upon staggering an enemy.” It pays off every time you break an enemy, which is covered in the stagger explainer.
Which abilities you can equip (and why some are dimmed)
The Equippable list shows every ability the character has learned from Visions, sorted under each Vision’s name. Abilities from the Vision the character is currently wearing appear dimmed with an “E” badge, and you can’t slot them. They’re already active because they come with the worn Vision.
Tronn is equipped on Rain, and the screen shows AP 0/108 with Tronn’s four abilities dimmed with an “E” badge. The four abilities are Restore MP on Stagger (20), Fill LB on Stagger (20), Focus Magic (10), and Stagger Power +20% (40). Restore MP on Stagger “Restores 5% of max MP upon staggering an enemy.”

Fina wears Warrior of Light, so Restore HP on Stagger (20), Multi-Cover (25), and Physical Counter (20) are all dimmed with the E badge on her page.

Abilities shown as illuminated come from Visions the character does not have equipped. Lid has Leah equipped, which is why Leah’s First Aid and Healing Magic +10% are dimmed. She can use abilities from Warrior of Light because she learned them earlier with that Vision equipped.
Lasswell wears no Vision, and his Vision field reads “Not equipped”. As a result, every ability he learned from Leah is bright: First Aid (10), Healing Magic +10% (20), Pass the Torch (30), and Pharmacology (30).

With Pharmacology and First Aid slotted, his counter reads “AP 40/108”. Pharmacology “Enhances the effect of items by 50% during battle.” Pass the Torch reads “Pass turn to an ally.”

Final Fantasy Resonance abilities and AP costs in Chapter 3

Tronn | Restore MP on Stagger | 20 | “Restores 5% of max MP upon staggering an enemy.” |
Tronn | Fill LB on Stagger | 20 | Fills the limit gauge on a stagger |
Tronn | Focus Magic | 10 | “Increase stagger power of next magic attack.” |
Tronn | Stagger Power +20% | 40 | Raises stagger power by 20% |

Leah | Healing Magic +10% | 20 | Healing magic 10% stronger |
Leah | Pass the Torch | 30 | “Pass turn to an ally.” |
Leah | Pharmacology | 30 | “Enhances the effect of items by 50% during battle.” |
How to unlock more abilities: Vision Mastery Rank
A character learns new abilities by raising a Vision’s Mastery Rank (MR). They earn MRP in battle while wearing that Vision. The Mastery Rank Up screen lists every bonus by rank. Here is Leah’s track:
- MR 1: First Aid (10)
- MR 2: Spirit+5 Permanent
- MR 3: Healing Magic +10% (20)
- MR 4: AP+8 Permanent
- MR 5: Pass the Torch (30)
- MR 6: MP+20
- MR 7: Pharmacology (30)
- MR 8: Spirit+15
- MR 9: Auto-Cure Ailments (40) and AP+8
When Lid reaches MR 4 with Leah, the AP+8 Permanent bonus is flagged as “New” on the rank-up screen.

Auto-Cure Ailments “Automatically uses Esuna or a remedy when inflicted with a status ailment.” Each character tracks mastery separately. At that point in the story, Lid had learned only First Aid and Healing Magic +10% from Leah. Lasswell had used Leah for longer and had learned Pass the Torch and Pharmacology as well. See the Vision mastery rank guide for the full system.
How to get more AP
The AP bonuses on each mastery track raise a character’s AP permanently. Lid had 108 AP at Leah MR 3 and 116 after Leah’s MR 4 “AP+8” bonus. That’s why her counter reads AP 20/116 once Restore HP on Stagger is slotted.
Each of Leah, Tronn, and Warrior of Light grants AP+8 at MR 4, then grants another AP+8 at MR 9.
Which abilities to equip first
- Pharmacology on an item user who wears no Vision or a Vision other than Leah. A boosted Mist Potion used right before Leviathan’s big charged hit kept all four party members alive through it. Strategy for that fight is in the Leviathan guide.
- Restore HP on Stagger on a frontliner, for free healing during boss staggers.
- First Aid as a 10 AP heal that costs no MP.
Now swap Visions around to let each character equip abilities they already know. Only abilities built into the currently equipped Vision remain dimmed. Follow the how to equip Visions guide for the steps, or consult the best builds roundup for complete loadouts.

Abilities, Visions and party members
Changing a character’s Vision—or placing them on the bench—doesn’t erase any abilities they’ve learned. Their progress remains intact when you rotate the lineup. For instructions on switching party members, see the party members guide; the Visions list covers every Vision.
