Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris is the Emperor's most notorious covert agent, a swordsman of frightening skill whose blade work is backed by a command of corrupting transmutation. He wields the same strange powers that now run through the player character's own body, which turns the duel into a glimpse of what that power could make of you. You fight him in the Fortress, a region that opens in main quest chapter 10, SHACKLED. The Lantern nearest the arena is High Tower.
The fight runs over 2 phases. Many of Raphael's attacks cannot be blocked and have to be dodged: his heavy attacks, his heal, his grab, the explosion, the fire slam, the sideways shot he fires while walking, his shield, and the fire slash. Learn to recognise these, since raising your guard against them does nothing. His attacks also build up Ignite on you. Defeating him gives 50,000 Catalysts.
