Enshrouded: How to Strengthen the Flame to Level 2

In Enshrouded, raising your Flame from level 1 to level 2 happens at the Flame Altar, and it doesn’t take a boss fight or a single survivor. You need a handful of common Springlands materials and one Spark. The upgrade also clears the Flame requirement on your next altar upgrade.

Quick answer: At any Flame Altar, press E, pick “Strengthen the Flame”, and pay Resin, Penny Bun, Bones, Shroud Liquid and Animal Fur (5 each) plus 1 Spark.

Flame Level 2 materials and where to find them

The Strengthen the Flame screen lists every requirement with a short hint under each item name. Gather these before you head to the altar.

The Spark comes from Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums. If you don’t have one yet, check the Flame Shrine and Flame Sanctum locations.

Strengthen the Flame and Upgrade Altar are two separate options in the altar menu. Strengthen the Flame raises your Flame Level. Upgrade Altar raises the Altar Level and costs Shroud Cores, which this step doesn’t use.

How to strengthen the Flame at the Flame Altar

Walk up to your Flame Altar and press E to “Commune with the Flame”. The FLAME ALTAR menu opens.

Choose “Strengthen the Flame”, the option labelled “Gain global benefits”. The top of the screen previews the change from Flame Level 1 to 2, and the “Upgrade Requirements” list below it turns each line green once you carry enough of that item. Press F if you want to pin the list to your screen while you gather.

Select “Strengthen the Flame” at the bottom of the screen. The menu disappears, and “FLAME LEVEL UP 2” appears above the altar; the left side displays “RECIPE UNLOCKED! Mana Drain II (+1 more)”.

Wait a moment for “QUEST COMPLETED! Flame Altar And Base Improvements” to appear. Your quest tracker then moves on to MAKING A HOME, with “Cook Something Over A Fire” as the next objective.

Commune with the Flame once more to hear what it has to say, then press Space to continue. The Flame points you to the two Ancient Obelisks of the Springlands:

“The spark of knowledge has erupted within. Ready yourself to unveil the secrets of our past. Find the two Ancient Obelisk of the Springlands to learn the world’s fate, a story of rot and fire. Only those who seek the truth shall find it.”

What Flame Level 2 unlocks

The global benefits are the same ones the Strengthen the Flame screen previews before you pay.

Beyond those numbers, the level-up also does the following:

Mana Drain II and one additional recipe are added to the unlocked recipes.
Completes the Flame Altar And Base Improvements quest.
Fills “The Flame” line on the Upgrade Altar screen, which now reads “Level 2 / 2” in green.

That last change matters if you want a bigger base. Upgrade Altar takes your altar from Altar Level 2 to 3 and widens the building area from 80m to 120m, but it still asks for Shroud Core x5, listed with the hint “Alchemist or Fell Bosses”.

Flame Level 3 requirements

Open Strengthen the Flame again after reaching level 2 and a tutorial box spells out the new gate: “You require happy Survivors to strengthen the Flame. Find lost souls and provide them with sheltered beds!” Press Space to move past it to the Level 2 to 3 screen.

At Flame Level 3, altar activation capacity rises from 4 to 6, Shroud Passage Level from 2 to 3, Character Attribute bonuses from 1 to 2, and Craftable Lore Item Level from 6 to 11. Water source capacity stays at 1. The requirements list starts like this, and more lines sit further down when you scroll (the full list for every level is in our Flame Level requirements guide):

Unlike level 2, this step needs two survivors housed in sheltered beds, so plan on rescuing survivors and giving each of them a sheltered bed before you can strengthen the Flame again.
