Chapter 3 of Final Fantasy Resonance ends the Old Town stretch with the Water Dragon as its final foe. The fight unfolds in a spacious plaza in Olderion, the Aquapolis, with three party members. The dragon often hits everyone and retaliates against direct weapon attacks, so tactics matter more than simply gaining levels. We beat it on Normal on the first try, by hand, with Fina (Lv 22), Rain (Lv 22) and Lid (Lv 21).
Quick answer: Hit it with Lightning: throw the three Lightning Scroll I from Old Town’s east chest and use Fina’s Thundara Blade, heal through its all-party attacks, and spend Limit Bursts and Crystal Braver while it is staggered.
Every physical attack you land triggers a Physical Counter that hits your whole party, so items and magic beat the basic Attack command here. Before you step onto the plaza, save at Old Town’s save point and talk to the medic soldier standing next to it for a free heal.

Where to find the Water Dragon
In western Olderion, the dragon is on the large square plaza north of the eastern street in Old Town, and it is the district’s final battle. Leave Old Town’s only save point heading south-east, then step onto the plaza’s southern edge to trigger the scene. For the route through the district, see the Old Town walkthrough.
El opens with “What are you doing here?” and Rain answers, “Helping you take out the trash, of course. C’mon, El!”

Arsha then backs him up with “He speaks the truth, El. You have fought hard to protect me.”

El replies, “If I agree to fight with you, will you shut the hell up?” and Rain closes with “That’s all I wanted to hear. Let’s do this!” El only appears in the scene. Lasswell and Nichol stay behind earlier in Old Town, so your battle party is Rain, Fina and Lid. Fina’s command menu has Attack, Skills, Warrior of Light’s Skills (her Vision), Summon Esper, Defend and Items.

Add to Google Preferences →Water Dragon weakness: Lightning
Select the boss and the target box reads “Lv.21 Water Dragon”.

Point a Lightning item at it and the box marks it “Weak”, which confirms the element before you commit a turn.

You have these Lightning sources for the fight:
- Lightning Scroll I x3 from the chest at Old Town’s east end, thrown from Items
- A Lightning Scroll II, if you have one
- Fina’s Thunder Blade (5 MP), in her Warrior of Light’s Skills list
- Fina’s Thundara Blade (15 MP), also in Warrior of Light’s Skills
Thundara Blade’s description reads “[Spellblade Skill] Deal Lightning physical damage to an enemy.” Water damage is halved against the dragon, so leave Water attacks out of the plan.

Physical Counter and the Water Dragon’s attacks
A physical hit prompts “[Counter] Physical Counter”, which deals about 115-150 damage to each party member. Thundara Blade triggers the same response because it is a physical skill, but its Lightning damage makes the retaliation worthwhile.
![[Counter] Physical Counter hitting the whole party](https://static.allthings.how/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/final-fantasy-resonance-wd-07.webp)
On its own turns, the dragon uses three attacks:
- Blaze hits the whole party for about 80-110 each
- Bite hits one character
- A water attack hits the whole party

Keep everyone above half HP so a counter followed by an all-party attack cannot wipe anyone. Fina’s Cura and Lid’s Cura from Leah’s Skills handle most turns. Hi-Potions restore 800 HP, and the Mist Hi-Potion restores full HP for the whole party, and the items list shows the rest of your options.
Provoke pulls the Water Dragon onto Rain
Use Rain’s Provoke to draw the Water Dragon’s attacks onto him, shielding Fina, who handles most of your damage and healing. In our fight Rain was knocked out twice, so keep Phoenix Downs on hand. In the battle Items menu, the cursor starts on the incapacitated character, making revival just a couple of presses away.
Running is not a fallback here. Escape is greyed out for this fight, unlike the regular encounters covered in the escape guide.
Stagger the Water Dragon twice
Thundara Blade and the scrolls fill the dragon’s stagger gauge quickly, and we staggered it twice over the fight. If the timing is new to you, stagger explained covers how the gauge works.

Each time a stagger ends, the Select Resonance wheel opens. For Fina, Rain and Lid, its options are Crystal Braver (W), Hibernal Fury (A), with Healing Wind (S) as the final choice. We picked Crystal Braver both times, and one of them dealt 2,682 damage in total.

Other party combinations unlock different options, which the Resonance list breaks down.
Limit Bursts to use on the Water Dragon
When a character’s gauge is full, press R to open their Limit Burst. Fina’s Holy Ray description reads “Deal Light magic damage to all enemies. Power scales with sanctity.”

Rain’s Infinity Drive reads “Deal Fire physical damage to an enemy. Damage increases by 50% if target is staggered.” Hold it until the dragon is staggered to get the bonus.

Lid’s March of the Machines reads “Deal physical damage to all enemies with a chance to inflict Confuse.” The Limit Bursts list covers every character’s options.
How the Water Dragon fight plays out
Start by using Lightning Scrolls and Thundara Blade. Have Fina cast Cura after Blaze or the water attack hits. If healing isn’t needed that turn, Summon Esper lets her call Siren for 50 MP to add damage. See the espers list for the complete roster.
The closing turns got tight for us: the dragon’s HP bar was almost empty while Rain and Lid were both down, leaving Fina alone at her command menu.

You don’t have to revive first if the dragon is nearly out of HP: in our fight, Fina finished it on her own with one last Thundara Blade.

Water Dragon rewards
The Battle Result shows 0 EXP, 0 Gil and 0 MRP, with Items Obtained: Water Scroll I x1. Our Gil still rose by 3,000 across the fight, from 7,389 to 10,389. Water Scroll I “Deals Water magic damage to a single enemy.” and its “Power increases and targets all enemies when thrown.”

After the Water Dragon
Once victorious, you return to Olderion with Lasswell and Nichol back in the party. Your new objective is “Go to Lake Dorr”, reached by traveling through the Cave of Waters. For other encounters, including the Wave Lopros guide, consult the bosses list. The walkthrough hub covers the remaining story.
