Final Fantasy Resonance uses six role types: Sentinel, followed by Breaker, then Medic, Commando, Synergist and finally Saboteur. A party member keeps the same assigned role, and each Vision also has one. Since the game gives no written role descriptions, check the skills each party member learns to see what a role does.
Quick answer: Rain is a Sentinel, Lasswell a Breaker, Fina a Medic, Jake, Lid and Sakura are Commandos, and Nichol is a Synergist. Saboteur exists only on Visions.
All six roles at a glance
Check the ROLE line near a character’s attributes at the top of either the LEVEL UP screen or the EQUIPMENT & ABILITIES screen to find their role. In the Vision list, each card shows its role below the Vision’s name: Tronn is Breaker, while Leah is Medic.
| Role | Party member | Visions with this role | What its skills do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentinel | Rain | Cecil, Charlotte, Warrior of Light, Wilhelm | Draws enemies (Provoke), raises party defense, Fire attacks |
| Breaker | Lasswell | Aileen, Bartz, Clive, Cloud, Firion, Lightning, Tidus, Tronn, Vaan, Y’shtola | Stagger and damage: Ice physical hits, multi-hit attacks, Haste |

| Commando | Jake, Lid, Sakura | Camille, Noctis, Onion Knight, Sephiroth, Shantotto, Squall, Terra, Victoria | Damage: Wind and luck (Jake), Earth and Mechabo (Lid), magic (Sakura) |

Add to Google Preferences →Sentinel (Rain)
Rain is the Sentinel, and his kit plays like a tank’s. He pulls enemy attention, props up the party’s physical defense, and makes sure your side moves first. He also carries Fire attacks, so he isn’t just a wall.

- Lv.3 Tackle and Lv.6 Provoke
- Lv.9 Protect: “[White Magic] Increase physical defense of an ally.”
- Lv.12 Flame Sword: “Deal Fire physical damage to an enemy.”
- Lv.17 Unity: “Ensure all allies act before enemies on the next turn.”
- Lv.22 Protectga: “[White Magic] Increase physical defense of all allies.”
- Lv.25 Crimson Onslaught: “Deal Fire physical damage to all enemies. Damage increases as the number of targets decreases.”
- Lv.26 Soul of Valiance: “Deal physical damage to an enemy. Damage inversely scales with own HP.”
- Lv.34 Call to Action: “Add an ally to the bonus phase.”
On top of that list, Rain learns Fire, Fira and Firaga. The full progression for him and everyone else is in the skills by level for every party member.
Breaker (Lasswell)
Lasswell is the Breaker, which is the game’s stagger and damage role. His first skill, Null Moon, sets the tone: “Deal non-elemental physical damage to an enemy. Target is more easily staggered for 3 turns.” From there his kit leans on Ice physical hits and multi-hit attacks.

- Lv.3 Dawn Frost: “Deal Ice physical damage to an enemy.”
- Lv.12 Haste: “[White Magic] Increase speed of an ally.”
- Lv.15 Ice Splitter
- Lv.22 Tranquility in Tumult: “Deal physical damage to random enemies 5 times.”
- Lv.28 Hastega
- Lv.35 Absolving Hailstorm: “Deal Ice physical damage to all enemies.”
He also picks up Blizzard, Blizzara and Blizzaga. Breaker Visions follow the same theme: Tronn, Aileen, Bartz, Clive, Firion, Tidus, Vaan and Y’shtola all start with Stagger Power +30% or +20%.
Medic (Fina)
Fina is the Medic. She heals, clears status ailments, revives and shields the party, and when she attacks she uses Light magic, such as Shining Arrow: “Deal Light magic damage to an enemy. Power scales with sanctity.”

- Lv.3 Cure: “[White Magic] Restore a small amount of HP.”
- Lv.5 Esuna: “[White Magic] Cure all status ailments other than KO.”
- Lv.8 Pray: “Cure an ally’s status ailments and restore their HP.”
- Lv.11 Shell
- Lv.14 Light Veil: “Activate a barrier on all allies that nullifies a status ailment or debuff once.”
- Lv.17 Cura and Lv.23 Raise
- Lv.25 Radiant Restoration: “Revive all KO’d allies and restore their HP.”
- Lv.35 Curaga
- Lv.36 Entrust: “Transfer own LB gauge to an ally.”
- Lv.38 Cheer: “Increase physical defense, magic defense, and speed of an ally.”
Only two Visions carry the Medic role, Leah and Ayaka, and both start with “Healing Magic +30%”.
Commando (Jake, Lid and Sakura)
Commando is the only role shared by three party members, and their kits barely overlap. What ties them together is damage. Commando Visions (Camille, Noctis, Onion Knight, Sephiroth, Shantotto, Squall, Terra and Victoria) back that up, starting with Physical Attack +20%/+30% or Magic Attack +20%/+30%.
Jake
Jake deals Wind damage and has a luck level that his abilities build up and consume. Gale Strike says “Deal Wind physical damage to an enemy. Damage increased upon dealing a critical hit. Luck level raised by 1 after use.”, while Gamble Shot spends that resource: “Deal physical damage with a guaranteed critical hit. Hit chance scales with luck level.” He can also cast Bravery, “[White Magic] Increase physical attack of an ally.”, and use Camouflage to keep one ally off enemy targets for 3 turns.
Lid
Lid deals Earth damage, partly through Mechabo skills like Mechabo Kick: “[Mechabo Skill] Deal Earth physical damage to an enemy.” She also learns Stone, Stonera, Stonega and Reflect.
Sakura
Sakura is the magic Commando. Her spread includes Thunder, Thundara and Thundaga, plus:
- Rampant Elements: “Deal random elemental magic damage (excluding Light and Dark) to random enemies 3 times.”
- Tonitus: “Deal Lightning magic damage to all enemies with a chance to inflict Paralysis.”
- Blighted Gloom: “Deal Dark magic damage to all enemies and decrease their magic defense.”
- Magicide: “Remove buffs from an enemy.”
- Eternal Veil: “Activate a barrier on all allies that nullifies damage taken once.”
Synergist (Nichol)
Nichol is the only Synergist in the game, and no Vision has the role. His kit is support and control, built around party-wide Formation skills and a set of buffs and debuffs.
- Formation: Steeled Advance, Formation: Assail, Formation: Charge, Formation: Bulwark and Formation: Regroup, all aimed at all allies
- Libra: “[White Magic] Analyze an enemy for information.”
- Dispel: “[White Magic] Remove buffs from an enemy.”, plus Dispelga
- Slow: “[Black Magic] Decrease speed of an enemy.”, plus Slowga
- Faith: “[White Magic] Increase magic attack of an ally.”
- Water magic up to Waterga, and Aqua Blast: “Deal Water magic damage to an enemy and decrease their speed.”
- Mirroring Prism: “Grant each party member the ability to perform their selected action twice. Effect only triggers once.”
Saboteur (Visions only)
No party member is a Saboteur. The role shows up on just two Visions, and both are built to weaken enemies by lowering defense or stealing stats.
- Amelia comes from the side quest “Errand’s End”; her starting abilities are Fire, Stone, Deprotect and Magic Attack +30%.
- Zidane‘s starting abilities are Free Energy, Steal Strength, Steal Speed and Magic Attack +20%.
How roles work on Visions
A Vision’s role identifies the kit it has, not a limit on who can use it: any character may equip any Vision in their single Vision slot. Chapter 1 contains only Tronn (Breaker) and Leah (Medic), but Fina can equip either one despite being a Medic. See how to equip Visions for the steps.

Here is how the full Visions list splits by role:
- Sentinel (4): Cecil, Charlotte, Warrior of Light, Wilhelm
- Breaker (10): Aileen, Bartz, Clive, Cloud, Firion, Lightning, Tidus, Tronn, Vaan, Y’shtola
- Medic (2): Ayaka, Leah
- Commando (8): Camille, Noctis, Onion Knight, Sephiroth, Shantotto, Squall, Terra, Victoria
- Saboteur (2): Amelia, Zidane
- Synergist (0)
The game lists no bonus for pairing a Vision with a character of the same role. Matching them just stacks more of the same kind of skills, while mixing roles lets a character cover a job their own kit doesn’t.
For the Vision picks that match each character’s role, see the best Visions for each character, and the Vision Mastery Rank guide for what each Vision adds as it ranks up.
