A Rock Shard is a loose resource that lies on the ground. Walk up to one and a prompt naming it appears; press F to pick it up. Each Rock Shard you collect gives you Stone.
The map has 11 Rock Shard spots, and they cluster near Horizon rather than out in the open, so that is where to head when you need Stone. Look around the boulder in the frozen stream at the start, then work along the foot of the rock walls of the ravine, where more shards lie. Stone is the crafting material for the Stone Axe, the Stone Pickaxe and the Stone Shiv, which makes these shards worth gathering as you set out.
