The Coal Boulder is a boulder you break with a pickaxe for Coal. You need a Flint Pickaxe, which mines Sulfur, Copper, Coal, Flint and Stone. The Stone Pickaxe only mines Flint and Stone, so it will not break this one. When you aim at a boulder, the prompt shows its name with a pickaxe icon. If that icon is red and crossed, the tool in your hand cannot break it.
The map has 163 Coal Boulder spots. The most are near Sonnenberg's Clinic, which has 16 nearby. Horizon and Shallow Rift follow with 12 each, then Landscar Cave and the Improvised Radio Tower with 9 each. Another 73 sit out in the open, away from any named place, so you can also come across them while crossing open ground.
Coal is the fuel for smelting Copper Ingots and Iron Ingots at the Stone Furnace. The furnace can also make Coal from Wood.
