Resources in Permafrost are the boulders and trees you break on the world map for materials. The map has 9 kinds of them spread across 1,357 spots.
Rock Boulder is the most common kind with 218 spots, followed by Flint Boulder at 200 and Iron Boulder at 196. Coal, Sulfur and Copper Boulders sit at 163, 137 and 136, and Trees have 144 spots. Sonnenberg's Clinic has 191 spots around it, well ahead of Horizon at 77 and Shallow Rift at 61, so it makes a strong first stop for a gathering run. Rat Queen's Crossing, Rift Cave and Landscar Cave come next.
Aim at a boulder and the prompt shows its name beside a pickaxe icon. If that icon is red and crossed out, the tool in your hand cannot break it. The Stone Pickaxe handles Rock and Flint Boulders. Coal, Sulfur and Copper Boulders need a Flint Pickaxe. Iron, Gold and Moonrock Boulders are beyond the Flint Pickaxe, so bring a better one. Trees come down with an axe, and the Stone Axe does the job. The tree falls as a log in pieces, and you pick up each piece for Wood.
