Caverns, region IV, is an old salt mine now partly taken by the plague. People fled into its tunnels when the war began, and few came back up. Chapter 4 of the main quest, DARK DESCENT, opens here.
Its Lanterns are Last Sunlight, Weeping Ledge, Old Mine, Mine Cart Route and Ancient Lair. Look for 11 chests, 4 notes, the Mining Shaft Key and the Ambers Dominatus, Limit Break, Lucky Shot, Lunatic's Grasp, Perfectionism and Surplus. Lucjan stands beside the Old Mine Lantern; speak to him from the front. The Homesick side quest also plays out here.
You arrive by a tunnel down from the Abandoned Church, coming out at a sunlit cliff edge by a forest. The way on is a mine cart in the tunnel east of the Mine Cart Route Lantern; step in and it starts by itself. The ride needs the Pistol and Stasis Transmutation, an altar reward here: pull levers, freeze gears with Stasis and shoot a growth on the track. From the Ancient Lair Lantern, walk up to the gate in the sand wall to reach the desert arena of the Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy. After it falls you return to the Abandoned Church, and Louis sends you to James.
