Rain in Old Town with the objective Defeat the monsters

Old Town is a one-floor district at the west end of Olderion, the Aquapolis, in Chapter 3, “Wardens of the Aquapolis”, of Final Fantasy Resonance on PC. It opens once Purify the waters with Luka ends with the objective “Go to Old Town, Olderion”. The district is a string of scripted fights with no random battles, and it closes with the Water Dragon boss. The route below is for Normal difficulty and fits into the wider Final Fantasy Resonance walkthrough.

Quick answer: Get ready before entering: the gate keeps you in Old Town until the Water Dragon falls. Clear three mandatory battles to reach the sole save point and its medic, collect the three chests, then take on the Water Dragon.

The gate displays the recommendation “Recommended Level 21”. After the opening encounter, Lasswell and Nichol remain behind; for most of Old Town, your active party is limited to Rain, Fina and Lid. Lid enters without a Vision. There is no autosave in Old Town itself. Crashing or quitting before you reach the save point returns you to the autosave from before the gate.

Before you go in: the Old Town lockout warning

Head west along Olderion’s west corridor toward Old Town. A few steps short of the gate, a message box pops up with this text:

“You will not be able to return until the event in Old Town is completed. Make sure you are fully prepared before pressing on. The autosave will be maintained at the point before proceeding into Old Town.”

Warning box: You will not be able to return until the event in Old Town is completed
The lockout warning before the Old Town gate.

The message is only a warning. Press OK and you are still free to turn around. The gate sits at the very west end, and stepping onto it brings up “F Proceed” along with the banner “Old Town, Olderion” and “Recommended Level 21”.

Rest at the inn and visit the item shop for Phoenix Downs, Hi-Potions and Ethers before using F. The Olderion shops sell all three. Aim to have the party at about level 21 before entering.

Arrival and the first forced fight

Once you are inside, Lid shouts “There’re monsters in the city limits!” and Rain replies “The people are in danger. Let’s move it, guys!” The objective changes to “Defeat the monsters”.

Lid: There're monsters in the city limits!
Arriving in Old Town.

Walk west along the street. About 40 m in, a scene plays. Rain calls out “We’re here to help!”, El snaps back “You again? I told you to stay out of our business!”, and Lasswell answers “We can talk after the monsters are defeated!”

Rain: We're here to help! next to a Ribosome
The scene before the first fight.

The battle is a Ribosome (Lv 21) with two Green Souls. The Green Souls cast Aerora on the whole party. We won with Rain’s Fira, Lasswell’s Ice Splitter and two casts of Cura.

The Battle Result pays out 646 EXP, 311 Gil, 17 MRP and a Knife of Poison.

Avoid repeatedly pressing F to move through the scene; any extra presses can carry into combat, where F brings up Display Unit Info.

Lasswell and Nichol stay behind

Another scene follows the fight. El says “There’s no end to them!” An Olderion Soldier reports that monsters are coming into the aquapolis from the northern garrison. When El hears that Arsha is helping people evacuate the north side of the city, he runs off.

Nichol hesitates: “I am a strategist. That means I have to determine whether I save the life of my brother…or the lives of the citizens.” Rain asks him to trust his friends, and Nichol makes the call: “All right. Lasswell and I will hold the line here. Rain and the rest of you will head to the north as reinforcements.”

Nichol: Lasswell and I will hold the line here
Nichol and Lasswell stay behind.

A Party screen then opens by itself. Lasswell and Nichol are shown with a lock and can’t be selected, which leaves a three-member party of Rain, Fina and Lid. The party members guide explains how the screen works.

Give Lid a Vision first

Lid joins this party without a Vision. Her Party panel shows “Not equipped” under Visions, and that is worth fixing before the next fight.

Open Equipment & Abilities from the Main Menu and select Lid.
Pick her Visions slot and choose Leah, who was equipped on Lasswell.
At the prompt “Leah is currently equipped by Lasswell. Equip vision?”, select Yes to transfer Leah to Lid.

Leah gives Lid healing magic through Leah’s Skills: Banish, Cure, Cura, Esuna, Shell and Shellga. With Fina as the only other healer left, this matters. For the full process, read how to equip Visions.

The boy and the Ether chest (optional)

Continue west along the south street. A boy cries out “WAAAAAAH! HELP MEEE!”

Boy: WAAAAAAH! HELP MEEE! with a Gigas Worm
The optional boy rescue.

Rain answers “We’re coming hang tight!” This is a side event that the story doesn’t need, but it started as soon as we walked past. The fight is a Gigas Worm with two Worgen. Afterward, the boy says “I…I thought I was going to be swallowed… Thank you…” and Rain sends him toward the city entrance. Keep a list of missables handy for optional events like this one.

A short branch beside this area heads roughly 14 m north and ends at a chest containing an Ether.

Forced fight 2: Before the bridge

Return to the southern street and continue west, rounding the south-west corner. Rain cries, “These monsters are everywhere… Out of the way!” Then you face an Ogre Mage (Lv 20) alongside two Goblin Mages.

Rain: These monsters are everywhere... Out of the way! with an Ogre Mage
Fight 2, before the bridge.

The Goblin Mages fall quickly to Rain’s Fira. The Ogre Mage is slow to bring down and hits Fina hard (she dropped to 190 HP twice), so keep her healed. We finished it with Lid’s Limit Burst, March of the Machines, and the Resonance Crystal Braver.

The Battle Result pays 298 EXP, 196 Gil and 5 MRP. Rain follows up with “Okay, let’s hurry to the north of the city.”

Forced fight 3: Before the gate

Go north along the west side of Old Town. An Olderion Soldier is holding the line by himself: “Gngh…! You’re not getting into the city…any further!”

Olderion Soldier: You're not getting into the city...any further!
Fight 3, before the gate.

Rain steps in with “Are you all right? We’ll handle this one!” and the fight begins against two Gigas Worms (Lv 21).

Fight 3: two Gigas Worms.

The worms bite Fina harder than anyone else, use Constrict and inflict Paralysis, which can cost Rain and Lid a turn each. We wore them down with Rain’s Fira, Lid’s Stonera and Cura and Fina’s Siren summon, and Crystal Braver ended the fight. The Resonance list has the details on Crystal Braver.

After the battle, the soldier says “He should be fighting a big one to the east.” and Rain replies “We’re on it, thanks!”

The only save point in Old Town and the medic

From where fight 3 happens, walk about 47 m east along the north street to a save point. A soldier stands right beside it and offers “If you are wounded, allow me to treat you!”

Soldier next to the save point: If you are wounded, allow me to treat you!
The medic soldier by the save point.

Speak with the soldier to restore the entire party’s HP and MP at no cost. You don’t need to open a menu, and you may use this service repeatedly.

Save here. This is the first save since the autosave outside the gate and the only save point in Old Town. If you’re unsure how saving works, check how to save.

The cat and the Mist Hi-Potion chest (optional)

From the save point, walk about 24 m south. A cat is trapped (“Mrrrr… Myaaa!”) and Rain says “More monsters… Not on my watch!” The fight is a Ribosome with two Goblin Mages, and the Goblin Mages cast Confuse. When it’s over, Rain tells the cat “It’s dangerous here, so run toward the city entrance, okay?”

Cat: Mrrrr... Myaaa! next to a Ribosome
The optional cat rescue.

From there, follow the narrow path heading south-west to its end, where a chest contains a Mist Hi-Potion.

You obtained the following: Mist Hi-Potion x1
The Mist Hi-Potion chest.

Keep the Mist Hi-Potion for the boss fight; it restores the whole party to full health.

The Lightning Scroll I chest

Head north again, then take the long street east for about 60 m until you reach Old Town’s far eastern end. The chest there holds Lightning Scroll I x3. Walking to it does not start the boss fight.

You obtained the following: Lightning Scroll I x3
The Lightning Scroll I chest at the east end.

Collect this chest before facing the boss. Lightning is the Water Dragon’s weakness, and throwing a Lightning Scroll deals bonus damage. Then head back to the save point, speak with the medic and save once more.

The Water Dragon

The boss waits on the big square plaza north of the east street. Stepping onto the south edge of the plaza starts the scene. El asks “What are you doing here?” and Rain answers “Helping you take out the trash, of course. C’mon, El!” Arsha adds “He speaks the truth, El. You have fought hard to protect me.” El replies “If I agree to fight with you, will you shut the hell up?” and Rain says “That’s all I wanted to hear. Let’s do this!”

El: What are you doing here? in front of the Water Dragon
The Water Dragon on the big plaza.

El fights only in the story. In the actual battle, your party is still Rain, Fina and Lid. You can’t escape this fight.

  • Level: Lv 21
  • HP: 24,000
  • Type: Dragon
  • Weak to Thunder (Lightning)
  • Halves Water

We beat it on Normal on the first try with Lightning Scrolls and Fina’s Thundara Blade. The Water Dragon guide has the full strategy.

After the Water Dragon

Back in Olderion, El says “I-I can’t believe it… We managed to defeat it…” and apologizes to Nichol, and Nichol thanks everyone. Luka’s purification turns out to have been only temporary, which means something has happened to the God of Water: “Outside of Olderion, she is known as Leviathan.” Luka says “We must head to Lake Dorr and check on the God of Water.”

El stays behind (“Brother, I’ll restore order to the aquapolis. You go with Luka.”), and Luka adds “We must pass through the Cave of Waters to reach Lake Dorr, so let’s head there first.” The Cave of Waters walkthrough picks up from there.

Lasswell and Nichol rejoin (“Lasswell joined the party!”) and a Party screen opens. On that screen, F adds or removes the highlighted member, so check your four before closing it. You’ll know the chapter has moved on when Quest Updated shows “Go to Lake Dorr” and the game autosaves.

Quest Updated Go to Lake Dorr with Autosaving
The next objective, Go to Lake Dorr.

Can you return from Old Town?

No. Passing through the gate traps you in Old Town until you defeat the Water Dragon. Because the autosave remains before the gate, the save point after the third forced battle is your sole chance to save inside. The restriction ends with the boss: Olderion, including its inn and shops, is accessible again afterward.
