The decisive battle, against Dracula and then his second form, takes place on the Castle Rooftops. The closest Mirror of Life to the Master's Quarters is Sanctuary of Solitude, so save there before you step in.
How the fight ends depends on what you have equipped when Dracula's second form falls on the Castle Rooftops. Beat Dracula and his second form there without The Self's spell Absolution equipped and you get the normal ending. For the true ending, you need to own The Self and have Absolution equipped at the moment the second form is defeated; doing so destroys the curse.
