Oil is a crafting resource made by processing fat down. Its tooltip puts its value at 7 Bucks, which is what a trader charges you for it.
Oil clusters at Promenade (House Camp), which has 10 of the map's 19 spots. Smaller pickings lie at the Greenhouse, the Church and the Solar Power Plant, with 2 spots each, and Landscar Cave has 1. Oil can also turn up in frozen bodies, insulated crates, lockers, quality crates, safes and toolboxes, so open those as you pass through. If you would rather buy it than search for it, Eric Hirsch stocks it.
Oil goes into Low Grade Fuel and the Oil Lamp, so pick it up whenever you need either of those.
